Middle High German kobold, "household goblin" → the Harz miners' name for a treacherous ore → German Kobalt → English cobalt, the metal, by the 1680s → the color, in 1835.
Miners kept striking an ore that looked like silver, yielded none, and gave off arsenic fumes when smelted. So they blamed the mine goblin, the kobold, and named the cursed rock after him.
They were more right than they knew. The "curse" turned out to be a real metal, isolated by Georg Brandt in 1735, the first new metal discovered since antiquity, and it carried the goblin's name all the way onto the periodic table.
The blue came later as a name, but cobalt had been quietly coloring glass since ancient Egypt. The goblin was in the blue long before anyone knew his metal was the reason.
