Greek Boréas, the north wind personified → Latin boreālis, "northern" → English borealis, which now lives almost entirely inside the phrase aurora borealis, "northern dawn." (Where Boréas itself came from is uncertain; "from the mountains" is one suggestion.)
That phrase has a corrected history. It is commonly credited to the astronomer Gassendi in 1621, but his first published use came decades later. The phrase already appears in 1619, in a work probably written by Galileo.
And the color is unusually honest physics. Auroral green is oxygen emitting light at precisely 557.7 nanometers; the blue-violet fringe is ionized nitrogen. A color word that names a specific wavelength, and one half of a phrase whose other half, Aurora, sits twenty-six anchors away.
