The rhapsodes were the traveling performers who carried Homer's epics. They didn't compose from nothing; they assembled inherited fragments into one continuous performance, put together a little differently each time.
The word then wandered. It meant an epic poem, then a collection of odds and ends, then an extravagant outpouring of feeling, and finally the musical form: Liszt's Hungarian rhapsodies, and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue of 1924, which happens to be the exact color family of this anchor.
