Persian lāžaward, "lapis lazuli" → Arabic lāzaward → Medieval Latin lazur → Old French l'azur → English asure, by Chaucer's time → azure.
Look closely at the French step, because that is where the word broke. French speakers heard lazur, mistook its opening L for their own word l', "the," and just dropped it. Azure is a nine-hundred-year-old mishearing, fossilized in place. Polish lazur still has the missing letter.
The word never stopped being the stone. Lapis lazuli means "stone of azure," which makes Azure and Lapis, five anchors apart, the same Persian word wearing different clothes. Spanish azul and Italian azzurro are its siblings, so the everyday Spanish and Italian word for blue is Persian too.
(One footnote, hedged: the claim that lāžaward was originally a place name, Lajward, a mining region in Badakhshan, is widely repeated, and less certain than the rest of the chain.)
