Meaning: "Stone of the flank," a folk remedy for kidney pain

Spanish piedra de la ijada, "stone of the flank" → French l'ejade, then le jade once French speakers split the word in the wrong place → English jade.

Those Spanish words were written down in 1565 by the Sevillian physician Nicolás Monardes, describing a Mesoamerican practice of wearing green amulets against colic and kidney stones. (The scholarly Latin version of the same idea, lapis nephriticus, "kidney stone," is where we get nephrite.) That French mis-split is the same stumble that produced Azure.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, China had revered the stone as yù for thousands of years: "the fairest of stones," carved since Neolithic times, the gem of emperors.

So the English name for China's most sacred stone is a Spanish doctor's note about a Mesoamerican folk remedy, misheard in French. No word on the wheel has worse credentials for a grander subject.
