Classic Mayan yax, "blue-green" + ha', "water" → Yaxha', "blue-green water" → the name of a lake in Guatemala and the great city on its shore, carried unbroken from Maya antiquity to today.
Yax is a textbook case of one word covering the whole green-blue range: the color of the water in a limestone sinkhole, of jade, of young maize. In the Maya script it doubles as the word for "first, new, fresh." And in Maya cosmology it is the color of the living center of the world, where the great ceiba tree joins sky, earth, and underworld.
In 1985 David Stuart, a scholar of Maya writing, read the ancient city's name-glyph as Yax-ha, showing that the modern lake still carries the name it was given roughly 1,500 years ago.
This is a color word you can visit: Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park, in Petén, where the name and the water it describes are both still there.
