Proto-Indo-European *h₂ews-, "to shine, to dawn" → Latin aurōra, the goddess of dawn, whom the Greeks called Eos → English Aurora.
The same ancient root, traveling down other branches, produced east, the direction where dawn happens, and Easter, by way of Ēostre, the Germanic dawn goddess. One root: a goddess, a compass point and a holiday.
The scientific afterlife adds a fourth. Aurora borealis, "northern dawn," is a phrase whose authorship was corrected only in 1978, when the space physicist George Siscoe showed that the usual credit to Gassendi in 1621 is a misattribution. The phrase first appears in 1619, in a work probably by Galileo.
So the polar lights were named by Galileo, after a goddess, from the root of Easter. And her pink is the first color of every day.
