Greek phoînix → English phoenix. That one Greek word carried four meanings at once: the deathless bird, a crimson-purple, the date palm, and "Phoenician." It is also among the oldest color words on record. It appears in Linear B, the script of Bronze Age Greece, as a line item in a palace inventory. Which of the four senses came first, nobody can say. The tangle is the story.
The bird is often linked to the Egyptian bnw, or Bennu, the heron-like solar bird of rebirth worshipped at Heliopolis. The color sense, meanwhile, is tangled up with the famous purple of Phoenicia's dye trade. If that thread holds, the wheel opens and closes on the same word. Phoenix at anchor 1, Tyrian at anchor 61, where red meets violet and the circle joins. A color word that refuses to be only one thing, standing first on a wheel full of them.
