Greek Érōs → English Eros. Where the Greek name came from is unknown, and may well be older than Greek itself.
The god is older than you think, too. In Hesiod he is one of the first beings in existence, a primordial force. Not the chubby archer, who is the later Roman Cupid. The root survives in erotic, and Freud kept him employed opposite Thanatos.
There is a genuine queer history here, worth telling straight. In classical Greece, Eros presided especially over love between men. He is the god of Plato's Symposium, where an army of lovers is imagined as unbeatable, an idea Thebes made literal in its Sacred Band. His cult lived in the gymnasia, and the city of Thespiae held a festival in his honor, the Erotidia.
One honest caveat completes the record. The Greeks assigned Eros no color at all. Hot pink as the hue of desire is modern: Schiaparelli's shocking pink of 1937, and pink's adoption as a Pride color over the twentieth century. The queer association is ancient; the pink is contemporary. Both are true, and this anchor wears both.
