Fuchsia#EB00FF, a warm-leaning vivid purple

At a glanceFuchsia is #EB00FF, oklch(67.2% 0.316 323.9), a warm-leaning vivid purple, fully saturated at the sRGB gamut edge for its hue. Partner it with a cool bright turquoise #75E3EA as an accent, a warm bold red #CA4962 for harmony, and a warm-leaning pale purple #9C8C9D as a neutral. Try it as a screen-first brand or accent color, and it takes black text at AA contrast. It shifts further on press than a run can hold, though, so Rhapsody would keep it off print-led brand work.

The name

Why is it called Fuchsia?

Fuchsia's meaning, origin, and pronunciation, with sources.

Anchor: A65 · one of the 72 anchor hues of ART

Origin: A German surname meaning "fox," reaching the color via a flower, a dye, and a battle

Meaning: The fuchsia flower, named for the botanist Leonhart Fuchs

FEW-shuh · /ˈfjuːʃə/ — famously the most misspelled color in English

German Fuchs, "fox" → the surname of Leonhart Fuchs (1501–1566), physician and botanist → the flower genus Fuchsia, named in his honor by Charles Plumier in 1703 → the dye fuchsine, launched by French chemists in 1859 → fuchsia, an English color name from 1892.

Two of those steps deserve footnotes of their own. The dye was manufactured by the firm of Renard, French for "fox," and, as the story goes, the bilingual pun was the point. And within the year fuchsine was renamed magenta, to celebrate the Franco-Sardinian victory at the Battle of Magenta.

Count the layers: a color that is a man's name, secretly a fox, commercially a battle. And in CSS it carries literally the same hex value as magenta: #FF00FF, one color under two names. No other word on the wheel has been so many things in so few steps.

Just don't spell it "fuschia." Everyone does. It honors a man named Fuchs.
