Greek órkhis, "testicle" → Latin orchis → English orchid, the -d creeping in from a Latin grammar error in the botanical writing of the 1840s → the color name in the early twentieth century, fixed in the popular imagination by the Crayola crayon of 1949.
Theophrastus, the father of botany, gave the plant that name for the frank reason that its paired root tubers look exactly like what he said they look like.
So the most delicate name on the wheel carries the least delicate word history in the whole English flower vocabulary. A fact Theophrastus recorded without blushing, and one that twenty-three centuries of gardeners have politely declined to translate. The flower is exquisite. The Greek is anatomical.
