Latin malva, "mallow" → French mauve, the flower → English mauve, the color, worldwide, after 1856. (And yes, malva is the same root as marshmallow. The candy is part of this story too.)
Easter 1856. William Henry Perkin, eighteen years old, is in a home laboratory trying to make quinine, the malaria drug, out of coal tar. He fails. The black sludge he gets instead stains silk a brilliant purple that won't wash out. He patents it at eighteen and first sells it as "Tyrian purple," borrowing the prestige of the ancient snail dye, then renames it mauve after the French flower.
Queen Victoria is wearing it by 1858. The press diagnoses an outbreak of "mauve measles." And the synthetic dye industry, with pharmaceutical chemistry downstream of it, is born out of a failed cure.
Mauve is what happened when a teenager failed to cure malaria. Two anchors away sits Tyrian: the last luxury purple, beside the first democratic one.
