Indigo#4100FF, a cool vivid indigo

At a glanceIndigo is #4100FF, oklch(47.4% 0.300 274.1), a cool vivid indigo, fully saturated at the sRGB gamut edge for its hue. Match it with a warm medium amber #E2A15A as an accent, a cool brilliant blue #5696DF for harmony, and a cool muted blue #5A5F71 as a neutral. Try it as a text color on light backgrounds, or a screen-first brand or accent color, and it holds AA contrast against white. It shifts further on press than a run can hold, though, so Rhapsody would keep it off print-led brand work.

The name

Why is it called Indigo?

Indigo's meaning, origin, and pronunciation, with sources.

Anchor: A54 · one of the 72 anchor hues of ART

Origin: Greek: "the Indian [dye]," via Latin, Spanish, and Portuguese trade

Meaning: The dye from India; the only spectrum color named for a country

IN-dih-goh · /ˈɪndɪɡoʊ/

Sanskrit sindhu, "river" → Old Persian Hindu → Greek Indos, the Indus river → Greek indikon, "the Indian dye" → Latin indicum → Spanish and Portuguese indico → English indigo, by the 1550s.

When Newton drew indigo into the rainbow in 1704, it became the only color of the spectrum named after a country.

The dye's older Mediterranean name hides the better story. That name was anil, from Arabic an-nīl, from Persian nīla, from Sanskrit nīlī, "dark blue," and anil is where aniline got its name. Aniline is the coal-tar chemical behind the synthetic dyes that destroyed the natural indigo trade in a single generation. So the industry that killed indigo is named, through four languages, after indigo. The murder weapon carries the victim's name.

The complementary color, straight across the wheel, is a warm light lemon #EBDC71. Rhapsody's pick is the split complement, just to one side of it, a livelier pair.

The accent is for the moments that need attention, the harmony for the ones that need calm; the neutral carries the text and surfaces in between.
