The Classical Arabic root z-r-q → Modern Standard Arabic azraq, "blue" → Moroccan Arabic zreq.
Moroccan Arabic, or Darija, characteristically drops the opening a- of the classical adjective, and that small clip is the whole distance between the Arabic of textbooks and the Arabic of Moroccan streets. (You will also see the word written zraq, or as zre9 in the online alphabet, where the 9 stands in for that deep q.)
Darija builds its blues by pointing. Zreq smawi is sky-blue, from sma', sky. Zreq baḥri is sea-blue, from baḥr, sea. Which means that navy, in Darija, is literally "sea-blue."
It is fitting vocabulary for the world's most visibly blue country: Chefchaouen's blue-washed medina, Majorelle blue in Marrakech, the blue pottery of Fez. Morocco holds two anchors on this wheel, Zreq and Tangerine. One for its own word, one for its port.
