Old English twi-, "two, half" + lēoht, "light" → twilight: the half-light, or the space between two lights.
The deep blue of dusk is a rare thing. A color word that quietly records how the eye works. As light falls, human vision hands off from the cone cells that serve daylight to the rods that serve the dark, and in the process the eye's peak sensitivity slides toward blue. Vision scientists call it the Purkinje shift. It means twilight genuinely looks bluer than an instrument measures it to be. The blue hour isn't in the sky. It's in you.
