Sanskrit hari, "yellow, golden" → Sanskrit haridrā, "turmeric" → Hindi haldī → English haldi.
Follow hari far enough back and it meets an old friend. It comes from the same Proto-Indo-European root, "to shine, to be yellow," that produced English gold and yellow. Haldi and gold are the same word, six thousand years apart, and they sit two anchors from each other here: one root, walked separately by Sanskrit and Old English, arriving at neighboring hues.
The plant is Curcuma longa, one of humanity's oldest dyes; Sanskrit tradition counts more than fifty names for it. And in the haldi ceremony, where turmeric paste is smoothed onto the bride and groom before an Indian wedding, the color still does its most ancient job: golden, auspicious, and worn on the skin.
