Southern Quechua anqas, "blue" → this anchor's anqas. There is no borrowing chain to walk here: the word is inherited, not imported. (Ancash Quechua says anqash; the dialects vary the ending, not the word.)
It belongs to Quechua's core set of color words, alongside puka red, q'illu yellow, q'umir green, yana black and yuraq white. Its best biography is the Andean landscape itself, because the word is written all over the map. Anqasqucha, "blue lake," names high-altitude lakes and peaks throughout Huancavelica and Ayacucho. Huch'uy Anqas, "little blue," is a mountain of 5,182 meters. A related form, anqasi, names cobalt-bearing mineral salts.
Quechua was the language of the Inca state, not "Incan," which names an empire rather than a language, and it remains co-official in Peru and Bolivia, spoken by millions. Anqas is what blue looks like from very high up, the color of the lakes that carry its name.
