Meaning: Sun + set, used as a noun since the 1400s
Old English sunne, "sun" + settan, "to set" → sunset: a plain English compound, and a noun since the fifteenth century.
The physics are better than the word history. Air scatters short blue wavelengths far more strongly than long red ones, an effect called Rayleigh scattering. Light arriving at a low angle has traveled through much more air, so most of its blue has been scattered away before it reaches you, and what's left is orange. It is the same mechanism that makes the midday sky blue: one process, two colors, at opposite ends of the day.
