Latin vermis, "worm" → vermiculus, "little worm," which in Late Latin meant the kermes insect → Old French vermeil, "bright red" → Middle English vermiloun, late 1200s. It became a color noun by the 1590s.
Then the word pulled off a strange trick. It changed hosts. The pigment we call vermilion today is cinnabar, a mercury mineral. No worms involved, and prized in China for lacquerware millennia before Europe named it. A worm-word was inherited by a rock, because both made the most brilliant red available; when the insect and the mineral competed for the same job, the name just followed the color.
Vermilion and Crimson are the wheel's matched pair: the same Mediterranean bug, named once in Latin and once in Arabic, sitting two anchors apart.
