Greek pépōn, "ripe," from péptō, "to ripen, to cook," the root behind peptic → Latin pepo → French pompon → English pumpion → pumpkin, once colonial America added the -kin ending that makes a word small and familiar.
The fruit is native to the Americas; the word is Greek. A New World squash wearing an Old World name for ripeness, with a nursery suffix stitched on in New England.
