Meaning: The vegetable, which used to be purple
Greek karōton → Latin carota → French carotte → English carrot, in the 1530s. The plant later gave its name to carotene.
Here's the twist. The orange carrot is recent. The first domesticated carrots were purple, white, and yellow, and orange varieties only became common in the Netherlands of the 1500s and 1600s. (The popular story that they were bred to honor the House of Orange is charming, and unproven.) An orange named after a vegetable that used to be purple.
