Shangdu, 上都, "Upper Capital," Kublai Khan's summer capital in Inner Mongolia, built in the 1260s → Marco Polo's account, which carries the name west as Ciandu → Coleridge's poem "Kubla Khan," written in 1797 and published in 1816, which fixes the spelling Xanadu and makes it English's byword for visionary splendor.
Be clear about what the word is. A European poem's dream-version of a real Mongol city. Coleridge never saw Shangdu, and his famous account of how the poem came to him, an opium reverie interrupted by a person from Porlock, is his own telling, which scholars treat with polite skepticism.
The afterlife is a tour in itself. Xanadu is the estate in Citizen Kane, and it is also a bright region on Saturn's moon Titan, mapped and officially named. A thirteenth-century Chinese capital that is now a place in the outer solar system as well.
