Minerva#00A9FF, a cool brilliant blue

At a glanceMinerva is #00A9FF, oklch(70.5% 0.169 242.5), a cool brilliant blue, fully saturated at the sRGB gamut edge for its hue. Pair it with a warm medium amber #E1A25A as an accent, a cool vivid blue #2151CE for harmony, and a cool pale blue #889299 as a neutral. Reach for it as a screen-first brand or accent color, and it takes black text at AA contrast. It shifts further on press than a run can hold, though, so Rhapsody would keep it off print-led brand work.

The name

Why is it called Minerva?

Minerva's meaning, origin, and pronunciation, with sources.

Anchor: A42 · one of the 72 anchor hues of ART

Origin: Latin, likely absorbed from Etruscan

Meaning: The Roman goddess of wisdom, craft, and strategic war

mih-NUR-vuh

Etruscan Menrva → Latin Minerva → English Minerva, the goddess Rome identified with the Greek Athena.

Her name is often connected to the ancient Indo-European root *men-, "to think," the ancestor of mind and mental. But that stop in Etruscan makes a clean line impossible to prove, so the goddess of wisdom keeps her word history to herself. Which feels about right.

The color comes from her Greek counterpart's most famous title. Athena is glaukōpis: "gleaming-eyed," "gray-blue-eyed," perhaps "owl-eyed." And glaukos is ancient Greek's other great blue-ish word, the one beside kyanos: it covers light blue, gray, and green, and it sorts colors more by their gleam than by their hue. Her owl still carries that gaze onto every university seal.
