Māori kiko, "flesh" + rangi, "sky" → kikorangi, often translated as "the flesh of the sky."
That -rangi is no ordinary sky. It calls up Ranginui, the Sky Father of Māori cosmology. One teaching tradition holds that kikorangi is his skin in the morning light, and that kahurangi, the dark blue, is his cloak in the evening. In everyday use the division is looser: Te Aka, the standard scholarly dictionary, notes that both words are applied across all shades of blue, so the light/dark split is a teaching distinction rather than a fixed rule.
Kikorangi is a Māori word built from Māori parts, not a borrowing, and modern usage prefers it to purū, which was taken from English "blue." Like Russian, Māori keeps one word for light blue and another for dark. The same idea, arrived at independently on opposite sides of the planet.
