A Semitic root b-r-q, "to shine, to flash," seen in Hebrew bareqet and Akkadian barraqtu → Greek smaragdos → Latin smaragdus → Vulgar Latin esmaraldus → Old French esmeralde → English emerald, around 1300. (That first step, from Semitic into Greek, is the leading account rather than a settled one; the trail before Greek is genuinely contested.)
An honesty note the ancients would appreciate: smaragdos covered several green stones, not only the beryl we mean today. Cleopatra's famous Egyptian "emerald" mines produced mostly low-grade material.
The great emeralds came later, and from elsewhere. Colombian stones from Muzo and Chivor reached Europe only after the Spanish conquest, then flooded east into Mughal India, where the most magnificent carved emeralds in history were made. A green that flashed, exactly as its root promised, across four continents.
