Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ-, "red" → Latin ruber and rubeus → Medieval Latin rubinus lapis, "red stone" → Old French rubi → English ruby, by the early 1300s.
That first root is one of the oldest and busiest in the family: red, rouge, rust and russet are all its children. Which is just what researchers who study how languages name color would expect. Red words tend to be ancient, plentiful, and home-grown, because red is the color almost every language names first.
The stone itself hides the wheel's neatest inversion. Ruby and sapphire are the same mineral, corundum: red corundum is ruby, and corundum of any other color is sapphire. One stone, two names with nothing in common, and the wheel sets them almost as far apart as it can. Sanskrit called the ruby ratnaraj, "king of gems."
