Milan#FAFFA4, a warm-leaning pale lemon

At a glanceMilan is #FAFFA4, oklch(97.6% 0.113 111.0), a warm-leaning pale lemon. Partner it with a cool bold blue #355BAF as an accent, a warm medium orange #D8A070 for harmony, and a warm-leaning pale lime #F2F4E4 as a neutral. Try it as a light surface, or a brand or accent color, and it takes black text at AA contrast. It's lighter than the paper, though, so no coated press can reach it. The brightest thing on a sheet is the sheet.

Color family

What kind of yellow is Milan?

Every color has a place in the standard vocabulary. This is Milan's, measured rather than asserted.

Milan's Munsell numbers - the industry way of describing hue, value (how light), and chroma (how vivid) - come up one short. Value reads 9.8. Hue and chroma don't, because the reference data behind that math thins out at the very light and very dark ends of the scale, and at value 9.8 it runs dry before the math converges. Printing a hue or chroma here would be invented, not measured, so Rhapsody leaves them blank. ISCC-NBS, the standard built on top of Munsell that sorts every color into one of 267 named ranges, still places this one in pale greenish yellow, by its nearest match.

Nothing else on this page leans on that missing number. The tonal scale, the pairings, and the press comparison below all come from separate measurements, and they land on Milan just fine. It's the notation that runs dry here, not the color.

Munsell coordinates and block from the ISCC-NBS system, computed by Rhapsody's own renotation inversion.

Milan in CMYK: one value for files, one per press

None of these presses can print this color. It's lighter than the paper, and ink only darkens a sheet, so the brightest thing on a printed page is the page itself. So what do you do? Pick a brighter stock, or let the paper be your lightest tone and build the contrast somewhere else.

In CMYK, #FAFFA4 is . That is the value design tools and file formats use when no press is involved.

Colors that go with Milan

The complementary color, straight across the wheel, is a cool-leaning vivid violet #5B4DB0. Rhapsody's pick is the split complement, just to one side of it, a livelier pair.

The accent is for the moments that need attention, the harmony for the ones that need calm; the neutral carries the text and surfaces in between.
